What is Tandem Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding twins simultaneously, known as tandem or simultaneous breastfeeding, is a common concern for twin moms. Many twin moms aim to tandem breastfeed to save time and comfort both babies at once. However, not every mom will prefer this method, and some may choose to breastfeed individually based on different situations or seasons. Here are six tips to make tandem breastfeeding twins more manageable.
Breastfeeding Twins Individually Before Tandem Nursing
Before mastering tandem breastfeeding, it’s crucial to breastfeed each baby individually to ensure a good latch and effective milk transfer. Some twin moms may be able to tandem breastfeed after a few days, while others may need weeks, depending on the twins’ gestational age. In the early days, the double football hold is the most manageable position.
Utilize a Twin Breastfeeding Pillow
Twin breastfeeding pillows are essential for tandem breastfeeding twins, providing the necessary support for both babies. Unlike with singletons, these pillows help position both babies properly, especially in the early weeks. Popular twin breastfeeding pillows include Twin MyBrestfriend, Twin-Z, and TwinGo Nurse & Lounge.
Get in a Comfortable Position for Tandem Breastfeeding
Set up comfortable nursing stations around your home, such as on a sectional or bed. Ensure a large area to accommodate yourself, two babies, and a twin nursing pillow. Sit straight with your shoulders down and back, bringing the babies to your breast, not the other way around. If the twins are too low, use a rolled blanket to raise them to the level of your breasts.
Latch the “Stronger” Nursing Twin First
One twin will likely have a stronger latch. Start with the stronger twin to trigger letdown and then latch the twin with more difficulty. This approach helps maintain latches and benefits both babies.
Use Rolled Baby Blankets to Keep Everyone in Place
Newborn twins can be challenging to hold in place on a breastfeeding pillow. Use rolled receiving blankets behind their backs to help maintain proper positioning, especially if you’re without a support person.
Switch Sides at Every Feeding
Switching sides at each feeding ensures both breasts get equal stimulation and milk removal. It also provides both twins with equal opportunity to nurse from the higher-producing breast and the stronger-latching twin to balance the feeding.
Tandem breastfeeding is a skill that takes time to master. Start with one tandem feed a day and gradually increase as comfortable.
