Why no parent of twins or multiples should have to do it alone

By Multiples of America President, Mary Adcock

Parenting twins or higher-order multiples is often filled with double the love, double the laughter, and unforgettable moments. But behind the adorable matching outfits and milestone photos lies a reality that many parents know all too well, raising multiples can be overwhelming, exhausting, and, at times, incredibly challenging.

The good news? No family has to navigate this journey alone.

When Two Heartbeats Change Everything

For many parents, the journey begins with a life-changing ultrasound appointment.

When Natassia Williamson learned she was expecting twins, her husband had an immediate reaction:

“The life that we once knew is over.”

Natassia, now a member of Phoenix Valley Mothers of Multiples, remembers feeling differently. Her focus was on the pregnancy and preparing for the arrival of two babies.

But once the twins arrived, Baby A weighing 4 pounds and Baby B weighing 7 pounds, she quickly realized how dramatically life had changed.

Like many parents of multiples, she found herself facing a new reality filled with constant caregiving, endless logistics, and the challenge of meeting the needs of two babies at once.

Unexpected Challenges Along the Way

For some families, the road to parenthood includes even greater hurdles.

Stephanie Ernst’s twin pregnancy was complicated by a diagnosis of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), which was later reclassified as Twin Anemia Polycythemia Sequence (TAPS).

Her twins were born at just 31 weeks and spent several weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“No one expects premature babies,” Stephanie explains. “You’re prepared for it at best, but you never really expect it.”

As a twin mom, founder of the TAPS Support Foundation, and direct member of Multiples of America, Stephanie remembers the emotional strain vividly.

“It was like living life on the edge. Every day was planned around going to the hospital to see the babies.”

For families facing medical complications, the emotional toll can be just as demanding as the physical challenges of caring for newborns.

Finding Support in the Journey of Raising MultiplesThe Hardest Days at Home

Bringing babies home is often imagined as the finish line. In reality, it is often just the beginning.

For Justine Wakim, mother of two sets of twins and member of Temecula Valley Mothers of Multiples, those early months were filled with sleep deprivation, constant diaper changes, and emotional exhaustion.

One morning, when her younger twins were only a few months old, she woke up overwhelmed and in tears.

The demands of caring for multiple young children had become more than she could manage on her own.

It’s a moment many twin parents can relate to, when exhaustion outweighs energy and asking for help feels harder than simply pushing through.

The Power of Parents Who Understand

So what helps families survive the toughest seasons of parenting multiples?

For Natassia, Stephanie, and Justine, the answer is simple: connection with other parents who have walked the same path.

There is something uniquely reassuring about advice from someone who truly understands the realities of raising multiples. It goes beyond online comments or parenting articles. It is practical, personal, and deeply compassionate support.

Justine experienced that firsthand.

After reaching out to members of her local multiples club during one particularly difficult day, she was met with immediate encouragement and understanding.

One fellow member, a mother of young triplets, came to her home and offered something priceless: help.

She took all seven children out for a walk, giving Justine the opportunity to shower, breathe, and regain a sense of balance.

Sometimes, the most meaningful support isn’t a solution. It’s simply someone showing up.

A Community That Lasts a Lifetime

Stories like Justine’s are shared every day among parents involved in local multiples clubs and the national Multiples of America network.

Across the country, families find friendship, education, mentorship, and reassurance through connections with others who understand the unique joys and challenges of raising twins, triplets, and higher-order multiples.

Many parents look back on these moments with gratitude, often saying:

“I’ll never forget that kindness.”

“I’m so grateful for the support.”

“Thank goodness for my village of fellow parents of multiples.”

These relationships often become lifelong friendships that continue long after the newborn years have passed.
